When used, the divine energy is too much for a mere mortal to withstand and they are generally consumed, used as a sacrifice to keep the [[:Category:Soulless Gods|Soulless]] locked away for another generation.

Several mortals throughout history have wielded the Staff of Ascension and eventually became Ascendants:

*Soll (168 CE) to become [[Ayridion]], the White Flame. He later lost his divinity and became Ilyarin, first of the [T[rue Ascendants]].
