A Nexus of Power is a great reservoir of energy that exists simultaneously on multiple planes. It is through a nexus that personal power reserves can be replenished, where travel to other planes may occur, and where guilds can summon forth entities for protection.

Being a member of a city or commune means more than just political affiliation, for it creates an actual, spiritual bond between the member and the nexus, enabling that person to draw power from the nexus. Each city and commune has developed special skills that require the unique energies of their specific nexus to function, creating the organization-specific classes within each archetype. Without access to the nexus, these skills become impossible to use. While losing membership in a guild may disenfranchise someone from the political process, losing citizenship in a city or membership in a commune is devastating in that it cuts the link to the nexus of power. Indeed, referring to a city or commune by the name of its nexus (and vice versa) is an acceptable practice, so closely are they intwined.

Nexus Types

There are basically two types of nexuses:

City Nexus

A city nexus of power is generally a mortal-made construct raised through high magic rituals and enchantments within a great center of civilization. A city nexus will exist upon the prime, elemental and cosmic planes.

Commune Nexus

A commune nexus of power naturally exists in forests and is overseen by two Great Spirits. Communities form up around these nexuses, whose members form a natural bond with the nexus' forest. A commune nexus will exist upon the prime and ethereal planes.

History

The first nexuses in Basin history are the 3 Great Trees. The first artificial nexus was the Pool of Stars in Celest. It was followed by the Eternal Flame in Gaudiguch, the Matrix of Hallifax, and finally the Stone of Truth in Magnagora.

Pluralization Grammar

Outside of the game, "nexus" is a 4th declension Latin word and, as such, "nexus" is both singular and plural in Latin. Since English speakers tend to find this odd, "nexuses" is an acceptable pluralization in English and this is the one seen in the Histories.

Incorrect plurals include "nexi" "nexii" "nexes" and "nexae". Please amend these if you find them on the wiki.
