The Great Illithoid Prison is both city and prison to the illithoid race, concealed beneath the dark and twisted waves of the Illwater Lake. In ancient times the prison served as the physical prison of the Soulless Goddess Illith, the Leviathan, whose rage at imprisonment led her to splinter into the illithoid race and escape the prison. The spiraling tunnel which contained the physical body of the Soulless Goddess now serves as the main thoroughfare of the prison, from which the illithoid have dug many smaller tunnels to house the segments of their prison.
The illithoid society is ruled by psionically powerful High Priests, and those with little to no potential are relegated to the miserable existence of grub farmers. It is whispered that the most powerful of the illithoid cannibalize the psionic potential of weaker species - and even other illithoid - to feed their own powers. The illithoid struggle eternally against the kephera, whose Hive Queens seek to continue the legacy of Keph and re-imprison the illithoid.
