Timeline of Lusternia

The Timeline of Lusternia is an ongoing attempt to develop a comprehensive overview of all historical events.

Prehistory: Cosmogenesis

Yudhe formed Dynara and Magnora, creation and destruction respectively. Dynara created divine creches in the Cosmic Planes, and created many other beings. The Fates were also first observed somewhere around this time.

Most of Dynara's earliest creations were cast off to Magnora to devour, though Magnora kept some as her Handmaidens. These would later be known as the Soulless Gods.

Yudhe also formed a son, who would remain Nameless. With the Son's help, Dynara was able to consistently create beings with souls, the Elder Gods.

Magnora grew jealous of her brother, attempting to consume him. Instead of being destroyed, the Nameless disappeared through a tear in the fabric of reality. Yudhe despaired at the absence of his son, and his daughters felt this despair keenly through their connection to Yudhe. Magnora and Dynara would later disappear through that same tear in reality on a quest to retrieve their brother.

The time immediately following their disappearance is known as the Great Silence. At this time, the Elder Gods dwelt on the First World and the Soulless Gods were somewhere in the Void.

Eventual side-effects of Dynara & Magnora's absence:

• Without Dynara, nothing could be truly created ex nihilio.
  • Any proto-gods left in the Cosmic Planes would never finish developing and are said to be half-formed.
• Without Magnora, nothing could be truly destroyed forever.

Godsreign: The Elder Wars

A more complete summary of the Elder Wars

Following the Great Silence, the Elder Gods are drawn to the First World. They organized Themselves into Circles based upon their innate abilities and predilections and are led by the First Circle, known as the Leaders and Mediators. The Gods began to populate Lusternia with life, a process spearheaded by the Circles of Awakeners and Creators.

Their reign over Lusternia is thrown into chaos when the Heralds of Magnora, later known as the Soulless Gods, began to move through the Void on a journey to consume the First World. A diplomatic envoy of Elder Gods met the Soulless in the Void but were entirely devoured, leaving the surviving Elder Gods to prepare for war.

The Elders won a pyrrhic victory against the Soulless by enacting the Daath Sequence, a fearsome ritual capable of destroying an entire Cosmic Plane. Alas, without Magnora's presence, the Soulless Gods couldn't be truly destroyed and soon reformed, made stronger after consuming those slain on the battlefield.

Several members of the Fifth Circle, the Thinkers, developed an Elixir from Soulless essence. The elixir reanimated the mortally-wounded Orlachmar, becoming the first undead, subject to a similar hunger for divine essence that the Soulless exhibit. After the second use of the Elixir to restore the Sun Spirit drove the spirit to violent madness, the Gods convened and banned the use of the Elixir. However, Fain and eleven other Gods secretly continued to manufacture and use the Elixir on themselves, which helped turn the tide of several battles.

The Twelve Traitors crimes are eventually revealed and the sixth Triumvirate sentenced them to exile to the Void. When the Soulless breached the Domothean Spires, the remaining Gods decided to escape into the Void as well in search of Dynara and Magnora. A last-minute attack by the Soulless resulted in a handful of Gods being stranded in Lusternia, and over the course of thousands of years, those Gods splintered into the mortal races of Lusternia.

Mortals began to populate the First World but were still ravaged frequently by the Soulless. Xyl constructed the Portal of Fate according to the Fates' instructions and mortals pass through it to become forever changed. Meridian is the last surviving Elder to splinter, and with that, the Elder Wars come to an end, with the Soulless still remaining a constant threat.

Mortal History: The Vernal Wars

The initial summary of the Vernal Wars

The mortal races of Lusternia carried on the war against the Soulless started by the Elder Gods, and created great Edifices of Power from which they were able to raise their own to great power as Vernal Gods.

The mortals who became Vernal Gods all possessed the strength and abilities of those who passed through the Portal of Fate [citation needed], and these powers were only amplified by becoming Vernal Gods. In this way, the Vernal Gods were effectively more powerful than the Elder Gods before them [citation needed], and so they had more success in fighting the Soulless than history had ever seen before. Because Magnora and Dynara had not returned to this reality, there was no true way for the Soulless to die; they could only be trapped: their ability to wreak havoc delayed until they grew strong enough to break free.

Eventually, the final nine Vernal Gods were able to trap the last remaining Soulless, the Mighty Kethuru, behind Nine Seals, though they had to merge themselves into one being to do so. With the Soulless imprisoned and the Vernal Gods' power absorbed by the Seals, the Vernal Wars ended, and mortals were finally, for the first time in history, able to thrive without their very existence threatened by extraplanar beings.

Precise dates are mostly lost to time, but several events are known to have occurred in order.

1. Gorob of Glomborolum becomes the first Vernal God and then teaches the method to numerous other people and places.
2. Shallah gives her heart to protect the krokani of Lirangsha and the Order of Shallah.
3. Battle at the Andoven Cliffs ends with Takimaru, Lasoki of Larem, and Cullumbara of Xavi slain, while Il'vania and Il'garala are possibly mortally wounded. (Only one primary source has thus far been found of this event.) Klangratch and Urlach survive.
4. The final nine merge to become the Nine Seals, form Avechna and seal away Kethuru.

The Aftermath and Founding of the Holy Celestine Empire

After the Elder and Vernal Wars, Lusternia was greatly damaged, with only pockets of the world remaining remotely habitable. The largest of these pockets is the Basin of Life, which became the primary region for the rest of history.

Tremendous progress toward remediation came when Ellindel Treeheart, her mate Glinshari Strongleaf and their students began working with the fae of the Ethereal Plane to heal the ecology of the Basin. These wiccans and druids helped found the nature communes around the Great Trees, the first Nexuses of Power since the Vernal Era.

Later a group of primarily merians settled an island in the Crystal Sea and attempted to purify the waters there. Their efforts eventually led to the discovery of the Elemental Plane of Water and the Cosmic Plane of Celestia. Channeling these planes, they created the Pool of Stars, the first artificial Nexus of Power.

The Nature Wars

Conflict broke out at some point between the Holy Celestine Empire and the forest communes, this is known as the Nature Wars.

The End of the Holy Celestine Empire

Ladantine VII, Holy Celestine Emperor, announced Project Cosmic Hope, an expedition to reach the then-theoretical Astral Plane using a nexus of power. The forest communes shared prophetic warnings they received about the Project, but the Empire ultimately did not heed them. Magnagora's Stone of Truth hosted the launch and, upon reaching the Astral Plane which is heavily Tainted by Kethuru's presence, the Stone cracked unleashing the Taint throughout Shallamar, Earth and Magnagora. The Taint cloud spread, killing or mutating everyone who encountered it. Hallifax used summoned winds to deflect the cloud from reaching them but ended up blowing the Taint south to Gloriana Forest, which became Glomdoring the merciless.

The Expedition, heavily Tainted or undead from being stuck on the Astral Plane, reappeared through Gaudiguch's Eternal Flame. Gaudiguch's wary leadership tried to keep the emperor's cohort under house arrest. Nonetheless, Hallifax invaded the Plane of Fire, fearing that Gaudiguch had fallen to the Taint. Gaudiguch held a similar fear about Hallifax due to this sudden aggression. The two cities resorted to their greatest experimental powers at the same time and the resulting interaction froze them both in time and severed the Taint's connection to Kethuru.

Elder Honeysap, the Great Tree of Ackleberry Forest, retreated from the world to avoid becoming Tainted like Gloriana.

Modern History: Coming of Estarra

The Elder God Roark eventually found the tear in reality into which Dynara and Magnora followed the Nameless Son of Yudhe. Roark determined that the three beings had formed into one and helped this being cross back into Lusternian reality. Thus Estarra the Eternal came to the First World and brought along with her the human race.

2nd Century

100 - 125 CE

  • The Celestines, Paladins, and Aquamancers of New Celest raise the Star of Celest for the first time since the Taint Wars. (Events #2)
  • The Nihilists, ur'Guard, and Geomancers empower the Necromentate to protect the city of Magnagora. (Events #3)
• 102 CE
  • New Celest and Magnagora war, and eventually the Star of Celest is brought down and must be raised again. (Events #4)
  • A misunderstanding causes members of the Celestines to murder the fae of Faethorn and feed them to Gorgulu in an attempt to slay the Demon Lord. Gorgulu instead becomes stronger and transforms the devoured fae into imps. A little fae girl resists being transformed. Mortals read a poem from King Gorgaliel to obtain a true tear from Nifilhema which is used to reverse the transformation of the little fae girl. (Events #5)
  • A group known as the Disciples of Crow enact a blood ritual in Glomdoring that allows Mother Night to bring back the Great Spirit Crow. (Events #6)
• 104 CE
  • The Hand of Tzaraziko is uncovered in the Skarch Desert, and the existence of Hallifax and Gaudiguch is confirmed, though they remain frozen in time.
  • Terentia returns to the First World. She reveals to mortals that Fain, Raezon, and His allies were exiled to the Void during the Elder Wars. (Events #9)

  • Magnagorans embark upon a misguided campaign to taint the wild fae of Faethorn in a saga known as the Tainting of the Fae. (Events #10, Events #11, & Events #12)
• 108 CE
  • The Aether Project, led by Trader Bob, results in the creation of the Aetherplex. (Events #13 & Events #14)
• 109 CE
  • The Oleanvir adder, once thought to be extinct, is reintroduced to the ecosystem of the Oleanvir Valley through the combined efforts of Magnagora and Serenwilde. (Events #15 & Events #16)
• 112 CE
  • Hajamin and Viravain return to the First World. (Events #17)
• 113 CE
  • The mysterious art of Dreamweaving is reintroduced to modern adventurers after a series of strange dreams plague the Basin of Life. (Events #18, Events #19, Events #20, & Events #21)
• 114 CE
  • Viravain sets out to remove the taint from Glomdoring and restore it to being Gloriana. Viravain seeks advice from Estarra, who tells her she would need to remake every inch of the forest to revive the Master Ravenwood Tree and cleanse the tainted Great Spirits. Raezon convinces Viravain that she can't complete the task, at least not without drawing power from the Seal of Nature to revive the Master Ravenwood Tree and cleanse the forest all at once. Viravain's attempt to do this shatters the Seal of Nature into 12 shards and Kethuru quickly possesses her. Estarra tries to destroy Viravain but the link to Kethuru is too strong, meaning destroying Viravain risks unweaving reality. With one Seal broken, Avechna is unable to arise and repel Kethuru. All the Elder Gods convene to solve the problem while Viravain/Kethuru runs rampant and consumes the 12 Seal shards. (Events #22)
• 115 CE
  • Mortals put differences aside to retrieve the Seal shards. Nodes on the Astral Plane are more energetic and draw stronger beasts during this time. With Terentia and Hajamin's help, heroes completely drain one node and retrieve a Seal shard from it. Viravain/Kethuru retaliates, but mortals are undaunted once they know how the shards can be won. The Seal of Nature is pieced back together but still inert. Estarra holds Viravain/Kethuru at bay while the Elder Gods pour power into the Seal, enough to rouse Avechna but not enough to end Kethuru's possession. Ultimately, Isune sacrifices her inner essence to empower Avechna to sever the link, freeing Viravain. This pyrrhic victory ends with Isune trapped on the Kethuru side of the Seals and Viravain forever warped by the experience. (Events #23)
  • Viravain returns to cleansing Glomdoring but experiences two strange side-effects of her possession by Kethuru: she cannot recall the ordeal at all and is no longer able to sense taint at all. Thus, she misperceives her work complete and Gloriana restored. When the tainted Great Spirit Crow is revived, Viravain welcomes her creation as though it had no changes. Viravain asks Lisaera for help awakening the fae avatars connected to Mother Night. Lisaera refuses to awaken tainted spirits, angering Viravain. Mother Night works with Viravain and many mortals to awaken Gwyllgi, the Dog of Darkness; Glumki Thorneye, King of the Redcaps; and Lhiannan Shee-Slaugh. After the tainted avatars wake, Queen Maeve's demeanor shifts darker because she reflects all fae. Maeve declares that whoever consecrates the Staff of Kiakoda would gain ascendancy in Faethorn. Serenwilde wins this contest. (Events #24)
  • The undead elfen Rowena Nightshade lures Laeroc, Consort to Queen Maeve, into giving her a child through strange alchemies and magics. Thus, the first shadow faelings are born. (Events #25)
  • The Glomdoring Commune is founded. (Events #26)
• 116 CE
  • Gruhk Sevacora becomes the first Titan. (Events #27)
  • Fain gathers people at a grave along the Shallach river and raises Gruvar, an orclach shaman, from the grave. Gruvar leads them to the Fortress of Shallach, which is surrounded by a barrier. Sacrifices and the sounding of the Horn of Urlach bring the barrier down and open the way also to the Catacombs of the Dead. (Events #28)
  • The Blacktalon guild is founded in Glomdoring after the commune sings the Song of Returning to open the way to Crow's Dark Nest. (Events #29)
• 117 CE
  • Aesyra is the first mortal to ascend to Demigod and becomes the Herald of Hajamin. (Events #30)
• 118 CE
  • The village of Shanthmark is revealed in the Grey Moors, along with what remains of an ancient krokani barony. (Events #31)
• 120 CE
  • Shikari returns to the First World. (Events #32)
  • Prophecies warn of an invasion. Creatures called gorgogs invade. On a mission, 4 lucidian sisters appear on Avechna's Peak and teach Astrology to the Guardians and Wiccans. Together, the newly-founded observatories perform a ritual that lowers a shield revealing the Arysian Isles in Bondero Bay. (Events #33)
    • The Arysian Isles hold a forgotten mage facility where Project Gorgog developed creatures from all 4 elements as living probes for testing Astral travel prior to Project Cosmic Hope. During the Taint Wars, when Earth became Tainted, the gorgogs became twisted and insane as well. The facility's resident Geomancers similarly went mad, while the Pyromancers and Aeromancers were called away to fight. A few Imperial Aquamancers did their best to seal the gorgogs into dimensional pockets; however, some gorgogs eluded them and the invasion began when the free gorgogs released the others.

  • Dimensional parasites, released by the invasion of the gorgogs, afflict the Basin with mental ailments. Development of the cure leads to mages being able to learn the skill of Psionics. (Events #34)
• 122 CE
  • The dwarf Barl Cleaver arrives in the Basin and introduces the Artisan skill. The League of Elite Weaponmasters, a group that is looking for Barl begins teaching warriors the skills of Pureblade and Axelord. This also marks the rediscovery of the native weapon skills of dwarves, igasho, krokani and orclach. (Events #35)
• 123 CE
  • Yojimbo Buntz of Estelbar developes the Eroee Ritual of Peace, an astrological rite that prevents violence within an uninfluenced village. Some villages readily embrace the practice and others mock it, but most decide to only employ it when Eroee is conjunct the Sun. (Events #36)
• 124 CE
  • The printing press is introduced, allowing mortals to take up the skill of Bookbinding to begin filling the libraries of the Basin with books. (Events #37)

126 - 150 CE

• 126 CE
  • Two trill hunters, Aiella Ironwing & Viric Longfeather, tracked two white tigers who attack New Celest and Magnagora, while Mraxin, an aslaran druid from beyond the Basin, tasks the Hartstone and Blacktalon with protecting the endangered species. The two tigers are killed, but two cubs are found later. The trill hunters teach the city warriors Hunting & Tracking, while the druid teaches the commune folk Hunting & Ecology. (Events #38)
• 129 CE
  • Lacostian uses a floating quartz disk to drain energy from the Seal of Beauty at the same time that a being called Whisp (later identified as Isune) begins contacting novices. Lacostian's disk succeeds in extracting Isune from the Kethuru side of the Seal but the disk is overwhelmed and shatters. With much effort, mortals and Lacostian assemble the pieces into a statue of Isune that comes to life, marking her second return to Lusternia. However, in a strange inverse of Viravain's condition, a horrified Isune perceives everyone and everything as tainted, even if they are not. (Events #39)
• 132 CE
  • Sudden lighting plants a crystal tree on Mount Seirode. Unusual new birds called Aerials appear and, when brought near the crystal tree, bond with it. With enough Aerials, the tree flashes and the Elder God Elcyrion, brother of Lacostian, returns to Lusternia. Lacostian is skeptical, believing his brother died in the Elder Wars, until Elcryion explains his escape. (Events #40)
• 133 CE
  • With the sudden appearance of the pillars in the Cave of Justice, Viravain is pulled into the Seal of Justice. Isune tries to extract her later until something goes wrong and so Shikari cuts the attempt short. In the aftermath, Isune's form contains both herself and Viravain. The dual goddess travels to Glomdoring and has a long conversation with herselves. Eventually, the Ebonglom Wyrm spins an enormous cocoon around itself, Brother Crow, Mother Night, the Master Ravenwood Tree, and the goddesses. (Events #41)
  • Black roses appear in Glomdoring and inhabitants feed the roses to the cocoon. Eventually the cocoon opens and the Ebonglom Wyrm emerges as the Ebonglom Wyrdling along with the Great Spirits Crow and Night and the newly-separated Elder Goddesses Isune and Viravain. They rose up in the sky and drew Glomdoring's taint up to them where it was transformed into the wyrd, a fae word that means "a powerful event which changes the course of the Fates." (Events #42)

  • An invisible membrane ruptured on the Astral Plane, afflicting everyone present with alien thoughts and strengthening the astral denizens. (Events #43)
  • Crow felt he was not receiving enough devotion. Brennan Stormcrow led worked with the Glomdoring Commune to put on a feast with dirge, dancing and bloodletting. Crow was pleased. (Events #44)
• 137 CE
  • Lacostian teaches the Basinfolk how to treat the insanity now caused by the Astral Plane.(Events #45)
  • The furrikin scholar Weeky Peedia emerges from the Skarch Desert interested in the great libraries of the Basin. Eventually disappointed by the extant collections, he founds the World Library on Avechna's Peak. He also endeavors to reward quality writings of both literary and scholarly natures.
  • A dark spirit from the Elder Wars seeks out Roark, alluding to unsavory secrets about the god from that time. (Events #47)
  • When the Iron Council of Magnagora seems unconcerned about a shrine to Elcyrion in the city, the Great Houses leave and begin plotting. House n'Rotri captures members of other Great Houses and enacts a demonic ritual. Upon completing the ritual, Kebira n'Rotri demands all people recognize her as Empress of the Basin. No one concedes this and so she causes the Necromentate to create "strange creatuers" which invade the Basin and eventually merges with it to become a colossal horror. With the help of Alaron and Selima of House y'Bolgari and Snaikka of House i'Xiia, a trap is set that disempowers Kebira. (Events #48)
  • In Faethorn, Perriwinkle Sweetpease proposes to and marries Butter. Animosity between the fae of Glomdoring and Serenwilde is put aside during the festivities. Queen Maeve officiates and after offers the newlyweds with one wish as a wedding gift. Butter wishes that her godmother Jeitara could join the celebration. Jeitara appears and blesses the couple before traveling to the depths of the Inner Sea to spawn mutated kelpies. The slaying of these aberrant beings gives Jeitara what she needs to awaken a volcano on the ocean floor opening a tunnel to Carai Caroo. (Events #49)
• 138 CE
  • Rahrah the rafter finds a gravely injured man in the Toronada. Some help heal the man while others search for his attacker. This leads to the rediscovery of the Verasavir Valley. (Events #50)
• 139 CE
  • Elcyrion and Lacostian attempt to use an orb they made to peer into the Void (just as Xyl had once done). A hesitant Lacostian evokes a shield to contain the untested invention. Though highly critical of the entire experiment, Raezon adds power as well and the vision coalesces into what appears to be Fain, Hajamin and Terentia in a losing battle with a Soulless. Fearing for their kin, Elcyrion, Lacostian and Raezon strain themselves to extend a lifeline of essence into the Void and narrowly rescue Fain and Terentia but not Hajamin. Fain and Terentia, both unconscious and greatly wounded, are taken to Nil and Celestia respectively to recuperate. Mortals gathered essence from the Etheral and Elemental Planes to hasten their recovery. Terentia awakens first and demands to know if "he has 'it'". Without explaining further, she dashes back to the Transcendental Fulcrux, back into the Void and returns with a large crystal sphere. Fain arises soon after, similarly concerned about 'it', and furious at the news of Terentia and the crystal sphere. (Events #51)
  • Mysterious abductions on Avechna's Peak worry Trader Bob that creditors of his have come to collect. Instead, it turns out to be gnome aetherspace travelers who needed powerstones. In exchange for the powerstones, Captain Girda Starhopper introduces the Basinfolk to algontherine eggs, which can hatch within an aethermanse to make the manse into an aethership. (Events #52)

Though Avechna was able to seal Kethuru away in the aftermath, it was clear that the weakened Seals would not hold for long and Estarra called for a mortal's Ascension to revitalize the Nine Seals.   • Soll is the first mortal to claim the Staff of Ascension and becomes Ayridion, the White Flame. (Events #89)

  • Ayridion sought out Isune and, along with his order, reached the place where she slept, plagued by nightmares. Morgfyre's order defiled the place and Morgfyre began to consume Isune until Ayridion was able to fight off the Legion.(Events #90)

  • Unusual weather in Serenwilde is traced to problems in the Spiritual Flame of the Hartstone. The solution required discovering the resting place of Nintoba and the Spear of Nintoba to heal and strengthen the flame.(Events #91)
