Anyone may learn the Cooking trade skill. If you are a resident of a city or commune, you will automatically be a member of the cooking cartel in that location and able to use the unique recipes of that cartel. Generally, as your skill in cooking increases, you will be able to create more complex and tasty meals. Eventually, you'll be able to infuse foods with a variety of beneficial effects, or even poison food. Ultimately, you will be able to host a hero fete, the ultimate in gourmet celebrations. You may only cook in kitchens with a oven.

To light an oven, you need to first put a piece of coal in the oven and then FIRE OVEN.

As your skill in cooking improves, your taste buds will acquire greater and greater skill to determine the quality and nutritional value of food. You will also acquire the ability to discern if food is infused with poisons or potions.


Baking

You must be in a proper kitchen to bake simple breads and muffins. Also see RECIPES BAKING.

Note: You can supply a list of additions to form part of the baking process, if you have the appropriate skill in Cooking. Possible additions are:

INFUSE <infusion> - Infuse all baked goods.
PRESERVE - Preserve resulting food items so they last longer.
FORTIFY - Fortify all dishes to be more filling.


Brews

Syntax
BREW [<fill#>] <recipe> [INTO <container>]

Brew up a number of fills of ales and beer. You must be in a proper kitchen and can brew 1 - 10 fills at a time, default is 1. If no container is specified, you must have an empty bottle. If one is specified, it must be empty or contain the same fluid, and have enough room in it for the amount you're brewing. Artifact vials, bottles, and keg runes will apply to this brewing.

To fill individual glasses with your brews, set the glass on the ground and POUR <brew> INTO GLASS.

Refinement

Syntax
REFINE <item> WITH GOLD

Whenever you craft an item, there is a valuation based on the number of commodities and your own skill. If the valuation is high enough, you can use it to trade with aethertraders who occasionally visit aetherbubbles and announce their presence on the MARKET channel. They will only trade a limited amount of items and you will have to compete with other merchants to find them.

Refinement is the process of increasing the valuation of a crafted item with another crafted item of the EXACT same craft design. This will combine the valuation of the two items into one item and can be done repeatedly until the valuation reaches a maximum valuation. You can also bypass this process by simply using gold to increase the valuation, though this costs 12,000 gold per refinement. Also, it costs 10 power per refinement whichever method is used. Refinement also increases the decay time on any item refined.

Sleep

Syntax
INFUSE <soup> WITH SLEEP

You may infuse soups to make those who eat it fall sound asleep. You must have a vial of morphite with at least 5 doses.

Botulism

You may infuse dishes to give botulism. You must have a vial of botulinum with at least 5 doses.


Fortify

You can fortify food and increase its nutrition. You must have some flax commodities.

Note: You can now fortify as part of the cooking/baking process. Append FORTIFY to the end of your command, and have sufficient flax to hand.


Pastries

You must be in a proper kitchen to bake mouth-watering pastries and when whipping up some icecream or sorbet, remember to add a snowball as the base!

Portions

You have honed your cooking skills to the point where there is little waste and you can use your ingredients with such economy that you may double the portions of the food you create. Very rarely, you will even be able to triple the number of portions. This has no effect upon liquids like ale, spirits or wine.


Cakes

You must be in a proper kitchen to bake elaborate cakes.

Piping

You can pipe words onto cakes with frosting.


Preserve

Wrapping your food in a colewort leaf in a special manner will preserve it against spoilage for longer than it might otherwise. You must know how to prepare the food in order to preserve it.

Note: You can now preserve as part of the cooking/baking process. Append PRESERVE to the end of your command, and have sufficient colewort to hand.


Love

You may infuse cakes to make others fall in love. You must have a love potion with at least 5 doses.


Wine

MULL <recipe number> [INTO <container>]

Mull fine wines. You must be in a proper kitchen. If no container is specified, you must have an empty bottle. If one is specified, it must be empty or contain the same fluid, and have enough room in it for the amount you're brewing. Artifact vials, bottles, and keg runes will apply to this brewing.
