Elevation is the term used for a game mechanic that models when objects (items, denizens, player characters) are in the same location (in-game room) but at different heights. For the purpose of this article, do not assume a consistent connection to geographic elevation: a character might be walking the limbs of a giant tree, but not in the trees or flying above a city that floats in the sky.

Nouns in the same room but at different elevations will NOT be immediately visible to one another (i.e. LOOK won't show a beast flying over you) and require other skills to spot.

The following sections are listed in order from highest to lowest. The section headings are what you will see prepended to the room name.

Flying above <room>

  • Usually present in outdoor locations but not indoor ones.
  • In windy weather, flyers may be blown into adjacent rooms.
  • While flying, you can LAND to return to the ground.
    • Similarly, you can LAND TREES, LAND MOUNTAINS, or LAND ROOFTOPS.

Abilities

In the mountains above <room>

In the trees above

  • Naturally present in forest and jungle terrains, however some abilities provide tree elevation where it wouldn't normally occur.
  • Beware: while in the trees, you can fall. If you fall, you will typically break a limb.

On the rooftops above

<Ground>

  • This is the normal elevation for all locations.
  • If the room name isn't prepended with an elevation phrase, you are on the ground level.
